This subject comes up from time to time on every list to which I belong.
Since one person's valuable information is another's garbage, the decision
is very subjective. In each case in my experience the resolution is in favor
of the postings and that the critic of irrelevant or tiresome postings has
three
options: read them, delete them without reading, or unsubscribe from the list.

Yesterday I had 148 messages when I turned on my computer. It is like that
every
morning. Another 200 or so messages come in during the day. Too many?
You bet! More than 90% of them get deleted without my reading. But if I don't
remain subscribed I wouldn't be exposed to gems like the formula for making
Sterno (1:4 saturated calcium acetate and ethyl alcohol) (CHEMED-L), the
two dozen or so woodwind quintets by Reicha (FLUTE), the schedule of the
travelling repairman from Buffet (KLARINET) or bills which are about to be voted
on in the California Assembly which will restrict bicycle lanes on our highways
(California Bicycle Coalition).

My advice: quickly scan the subject lines and delete liberally.

Oliver
