The Fischoff Competition has an excellent system for their Junior
Division auditions (I served as a quarter-final judge the previous two
seasons). Six groups are advanced to the semi-finals on the basis of
their tapes, and another 20+ are invited to a live quarter-final
audition. Six more groups are advanced from those auditions, and the
ensembles that are not advanced are offered an opportunity to receive a
coaching session with one of the judges (there is a wind, string and
piano judge).

As is always the case in a mixed competition, it is difficult to compare
a wind quintet with a string trio, but I have always been impressed with
the way the Fischoff is run.
