The audition in question was to replace Jerome Stowell, who had died. He had
been in the orchestra since the 40s as asst. principal and e-flat clarinet. I
believe he played principal on the Heifetz/Reiner Tchaikovsky Concerto
recording.

That audition was won by Larry Combs. When Combs became principal, John Yeh
moved from bass clarinet to asst. principal.
