Usually a smaller tip opening requires a stiffer reed. A softer reed closes of
the opening easier (less lip pressure), and yes a stiffer reed often requires
more effort to blow.

I have played a Vandoren B45 for many years and recently purchased a Marcellus
M13. It is a closer tip opening, gives a BRIGHTER sound, using the same
Vandoren #3 reed. After a couple weeks and 2 gigs, I have gone back to the
Vandoren. I'm not sure the "magic" mouthpiece exists. JMHO
