But they stop as soon as the find a suitable candidate. They don't keep
interviewing. So while they may be WILLING to spend that much should it be
necessary, if the first guy they call in impresses them, they don't even bother
to invite the rest of the list to interview and they save themselves some of
that money.

So to apply to the orchestra situation, it would be like calling in the
candidates one at a time and stopping at the first one they like even if it is
the first one they hear and sending the rest home. You would like that even
less than you do the current approach.
