one of my teachers always said "suck, don't blow!!!" and i always remembered
that water trick after that, to suck the water out of the tone hole...
i'm also a big fan of swabbing early and often, and keeping my bore oiled, so
water "slicks off" a bit better, and is less likely to hang out and cause
trouble...

on a side note, i've got a question about swab etiquette...i've noticed a lot
of clarinet players have REALLY wild coloured swabs, so audience members see
this flash of color when they swab...any comments? this has been a big deal
in my undergraduate studio that all the oboists were REQUIRED to have dark
blue, royal purple, or black swabs, nothing bright for concerts...
