If you haven't had your students try the Ridenour (yes, our own Tom R.!!!)
Encore student mpc, you are in for a pleasant surprise. The best for the
money. Also, Tom has a new line of pro mpcs out (which I am anxiously waiting
to try) that will surely be worth checking out. I've played Tom's model M mpc
for several years and it's great, but it's wearing out!! btw, the Woodwind
K series that y'all are talking about were designed for Leblanc by Tom
(they're called that because the factory's in Kenosha), and they are some of
the most consistent mass-produced mpcs out. When your students are ready for
their first pro mpc, they're a good way to go. All of my students play either
the K10M or the K5M (I have them try both, and pick what works better for
them). Unlike Vandoren, when you try a K10M, you know it's a10 and not an 11,
or 12, or 13!!! The company also does more finishing work on their mpcs than
the big V does. [Tom, please correct any mistakes I've made! :~)]. Tom
Ridenour has a website where you can get info on his mpcs (and, soon, the
handmade reeds--YAY!--they're awesome!!) The url is
