Hi , all! The purpose of blowing is to blow the water back into the bore so
that you can then remove it with a swab. If all you do is blow across, the
water will continue to come back. Obviously, it is necessary to blow very
hard or the water won't go back into the bore. I saw Ricardo Morales do this
at a concert in Orlando where he was playing the Mozart Concerto--it was the
rondo mvt, and since he knew it would be audible, he blew in rhythm with the
strings, who were playing at the time. What a great idea! Cigarette paper
can be used after you swab to dry off the remaining water from the pad and
tone hole. It's better to be able to play a Bb/Eb and have to make a blowing
sound occasionally, than to be afraid to do what's necessary because of the
noise involved, and try to substitute fingerings at the last minute, or
produce a lovely, watery, warbly sort-of Bb!!!! ppphhhh,
ppppphhhh Elise
