That "old boy" network at Curtis works pretty well for all orchestral
players. We should all thank our lucky stars that a place like that is
still around and is tuition free. BTW part of the reason for the success of
the school is that attracts students internationally. It is extraordinarly
tough to get into. For those who don't know, they only accept enough
instrumental students to staff a 100 person orchestra. They also have an
extraordinary piano and opera department. Students can stay for periods of
time longer than four or five years (i.e. they graduate when they are
ready). For those of you fortunate to be in town during the school year,
you owe it to yourself to check out the free recitals given by students (and
sometimes faculty) every Mon., Wed., and Fridays.

I also take some of the remarks made recently that the "old boy" network
isn't that great. Well if that network claims the membership the likes of
Portnoy, Bonade, Montanaro, Hara, Gigliotti, and others I think its worthy
of our admiration.

Montanaro also directs the Philadelphia Chamber Ensemble. They have a 3
concert season that is terrific if you like chamber music. He played at all
3 concerts this past season. He really is special. Concerts are held
typically in Nov., Jan, and March in a wonderful church in the heart of
Philadelphia's historic section.
