I tried the self-adhesive cork strips once and they were a waste of money in
my opinion. The cork in those strips is a synthetic material, and the adhesive
isn't exactly industrial strength. I would suggest investing in some sheet
cork and contact cement. You can do the job yourself if you are careful and
attentive.

Otherwise, your tenon string "fix" seems worth a try...
