In a message dated 98-04-20 16:23:43 EDT, you write:

<< I am assuming to help Jonathan understand it better.
But we were operating on an assumption that he wanted to know WHY it
exists >>

In all due fairness Mr. Garrett, what do you mean by the term "we"? What is
your orchestral experience, and why should us listers consider you an
authority on orchestra hiring practices? Until you provide proof of your
expertise, I would appreciate you stop pontificating and try to keep your foot
out of your mouth (please correct me if I'm wrong). The only people who can
provide factual imput are professional orchestra players in a major or semi-
major orchestra. Larry Libberson and David Neithamer spoke up and provided
some helpful data and cleared up some issues that were shady. All others who
spoke were stating mostly opinions and heresay. I agree that Cohler was
probably a little upset at the NSO's audition/resume practice and was blowing
off some steam. I assumed most listers are moderately intelligent and could
recognize that (notice I said assume).

Although I agree a resume is important, it is not a tell-all tale of one's
ability. Orchestra playing is not like a traditionl business where a good
resume alone can land you a job. The audition committee will know immediately
if you lied on the resume as soon as you play. If orchestras used the "resume
only" logic to accept auditioners, then who's going to stop a player from
lying and falsely building it up. The audition should serve as the resume,
since it gives the employer instant awareness of the applicant's ability. As
with any job, a resume will only get you so far...in the end, you either put
up or shut up.
