It is possible on trumpet--Wynton Marsalis performed Perpetual Motion on
the Carnival album w/ the Eastman Wind Ensemble in 1 take--or rather
many takes, but no splicing in the finished product.

Allen Vizzuti does it, too--and why not, he does everything else. I
have not been able to hear any grunting etc. when he does it, either
from the audience or from 5 feet away when accompanying him.

Well stated. Exactly what I was thinking. How did people read
jealosy into my post? I made an observation that the circular
breathing
could be heard on a recording and did detract from the performance.
This
made the recording sound like I was listening to an old LP with some
surface noise. Otherwise the performance was fine.
By the way, what instruments can't circular breath? I know the
clarinet, sax, and oboe can. What about flute, bassoon, and brass
instruments? If it's not physically possible on these instruments what
do
these players do for those long phrases (or whole movements)? For the
people who do use this technique, who taught it to you? I'm curious
where
this started in the classical world. My first encounter with hearing it
was on an old Buddy Rich LP of Channel 1 Suite where the sax soloist
does
circular breath (yes you can hear it on the recording).
It's interesting to look back on some of the great performers
like
Wright, Marcellus, Bonade, etc and wonder how they survived without
circular breathing. When I've seen Wright, Combs, Cohen, Dagon,
Gigliotti,
etc live I've never been aware of their circular breathing - maybe they
didn't do it??
