The audition situation in Canada may be explained by reasons Elizabeth
gives. One significant reason in addition is that in order to hire a
non-Canadian, employers are required by law to prove that there are no
Canadians with equal qualifications. So two rounds of auditions are a way of
avoiding lawsuits, fines and problems with immigration. This does give
Canadians opportunities to audition, although it would be interesting to
know if this affected hiring. In some professional situations, the call for
applications from Canadians is a token process to satisfy legal requirements.
