There is a story that Fred Hemke was playing a saxophone solo with the
Northwestern University summer band outdoors on Deering meadow (this would
have been in the early '60s), when a jet from the nearby Glenview Naval Air
Station flew overhead during the cadenza. Fred was sustaining a high note
when the jet drowned him out, was still sustaining it when the plane passed
by, and went on to finish the cadenza to grand applause. Circular breathing? -
or some other clever circus trick? :)
