Gary,
I recall seeing the results of a survey conducted by the Eastman
School of Music of their graduates in music performance. One of the
questions dealt with how many of those made their living ONLY performing.
The percentage was extremely low, less than 5%, with the rest involved in
some other area, especially teaching. Of that approximately 5%, most were
singers or pianists. The listing I saw was quite awhile ago, close to 10
years, but I believe the pattern would not have changed in the past few
years.
