At least you _have_ an orchestra! At our school district there is no
orchestra, and the high school band director is also the 8th grade
band director at the middle school.
At least the music program is bulging at the seams here; there are
actually _too many_ kids for the program to support, and the budget
is growing because of it. However, after speaking to the band director,
I don't think there'll ever be an orchestra program, since the startup
costs at this point would be too apparent. The orchestra program would
involve setting up a middle school program, a high school program,
new teachers, and more (expensive) instruments.
I've volunteered to buy new music for the middle school band, but
the school board doesn't want me to do that (for various and sundry
reasons, most leading to the fact that it would make them look bad).
I'm into my second kid taking band, and I've already heard most of the
music that they play - I wanted a change. I've got a 3rd kid who'll be
starting band in a few years - and I'll probably have to listen to
the same arrangement of Eine Kliene Nachtmusik _again_
And the symphonic band _has_ to march ...
