Actually, i managed to do just that (get out of marching, anyway).
After the first year, i decided i was tired of being gone every
weekend, so i took orchestra for the first semester (at least until
concert season started). That's where i learned to play sting bass.
We played the New World finale one year, and the conductor never did
hear me whistling the clarinet solo from the back row...
