I think you've really hit the nail on the head, Roger. The band/music
program that appears to the public to be just an adjunct to a sports
program is inherently expendable and cutting it will seem like no great
loss to most people. And one that looks suspiciously like a "club"
formed as an excuse for exotic trips is even less dear to the public. A
high-quality, serious music-oriented program would hopefully be its own
justification and perhaps the most likely to survive.

(I was going to put "surviving moronic budget trashing by mindless,
greedy, materialistic voters" in the subject line, but I wouldn't want
to offend anyone :-); besides, it wouldn't fit)
