I own one of these old Buffet (serial # in the 17xx) 1928 or 1929, and
use it as my only
working clarinet. The wood has never cracked and is subjected to extreme
temp changes
here in MI. (even left in my car along with vintage saxes and flute). I
warm the axes slowly and have suffered no discernable damage. Not a
recommendation to follow suit but a statement of fact. As I'm sure many
of you know, all that is required for the throat A&Ab keys, is a small
shim of cork which should take up NEARLY all the play, but leave just a
hair of clearance so that the A key will close...a simple matter.
The Ab if I understand correctly, is not meant to open to the same
extent when activated by the A key as when fingered independently.
