All I can say is that I'm glad I went to high school where I did (Ottawa,
Canada). We had no football team, and the purchase of a new
basketball scoreboard for the gym was postponed for two years so our
concert band could go on an exchange to Finland. We had 2 orchestras
and no marching band....

[Not meaning to gloat, just to point out that things aren't
necessarily just as bad all across North America.]
