Jason,
I do aggree with you. You can major in anything and still study
clarinet at a university or with a professional clarinetist. I did this
for years (my first degree is mechanical engineering). At the U of Wis. we
had people that were grad students in chemistry and playing in wind
ensemble. Two of the top bassoons were biology majors. The trouble is
that sometimes students enter college with very narrow interests - played
in band, marched, pep band - and didn't work on broading their interests in
high school or didn't study hard in other areas. Getting into business or
engineering school is very competitive compared to getting into music - at
some schools. The number of students majoring in music is less than in the
60's, 70's, and 80's (I was around for only two of those decades). You are
right, sometimes people major in music who are not cut out to be educators
or who don't know what goes into being a good educator. So what should we
do?

Dan
