Unfortunately, most non-music majors are treated very badly by music
departments--at least in my personal experience. It matters not that
you play better than their registered majors, either.

Charlie Neidich (Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, winner of the Naumberg
competition (beating John Bruce Yeh), former prof. = Eastman) was the
outstanding music undergraduate @-----.
Anthropology, I believe. A great sax player, Kenny Gorelick (known as
Kenny G to most of you) wasn't either--he's a CPA.

Good luck keeping your hand in--hopefully, you won't end up in a
deaprtment that closes you out of classes or performance opportuinties
simply because of your declared major. I was fortunate--of the 2
colleges I attended, one (the University of Washington) greeted
non-majors with open arms. My law school transcript is quite odd, too;
having "wind ensemble" and "clarinet" on the transcript made for some
fun interviews. The are other places, however (like Western Washington
University, at least when I attended there) that simply don't allow you
to register for classes (that you are perfectly capable of excelling in)
because you are not a declared major.

I'm going to be heading into my senior year of high school next year and
soon I
will be off to college. While I don't really want to pursue a major in

would like to keep involved with it and learn more about theory,
history, etc.

though. I realize that each school differs in its requirements, but
could some
of the professors on the list give me a general idea of what a music
minor may
entail -- what type of audition, course work, recitals, etc?
