Dear Ken, There is nothing wrong with your clarinet or your tuner. Tuners
are set to concert pitch (unless it has a transpose switch, which mine does),
which is the key of C. Your clarinet is in Bb, so you would HAVE to play one
whole step higher to get to concert pitch (namely, "playing a B gave me a
perfectly matched note" , the tuner's A). In bands and orchestras, there are
about 5 or 6 different keys that instruments are piched in, and each person
has to learn their transposition to be able to all play the same note to tune
together. Instruments in concert pitch include violin, flute, oboe, mallet
percussion, and the bass clef instuments like tuba, trombone, bassoon, double
bass, as well as piano and voices. Other Bb instruments besides clarinet
include trumpet, soprano and tenor sax, treble clef baritone, and the other
Bbclarinets like bass cl and contrabass cl.
Hope this helps. Elise
