Roger,
I thought the point was that there already WAS polish residue gumming up
the screw! Otherwise, I would not have suggested this! Nail polish on the
surface of the screw could probably just be chipped off, so you wouldn't
need to do this under normal circumstances!
Also, I assume you mean to point out that acetone is flammable, and not
that it would burn the skin (on the contrary, it makes your skin feel cold
from the evaporation. Boys and girls, don't try this at home! We are real
live scientists playing in the safety of our laboratories!). Obviously, you
would not want to work near open flames (which you wouldn't do if you were
just using nail polish remover to remove nail polish, anyway!), but it is
unlikely to just burst into flames! Acetone is not nearly as volatile as
ether - you WOULD have time to get the screw out first!
