Either wax, (my preferance) or soap is a fair lubricant . But the point is
that one only uses enough to fill the screw threads, no surplus. In this
manner, there should be none inside the rod. I had a much used Selmer "cigar-
cutter" Alto Sax on which the octave key screw would back out and if not
caught, the key would cock on an angle and the pad wouldn't seat, usually in
the middle of a performance. The wax worked and was still there when I traded
the instrument.

Another method wouls be to wind a small amount of light sewing thread around
the threads of the screw, put the screw in the hole moderately tight, and trim
off any excess.

All three of these methods have worked for me at one time or another. None can
do any damage and they're all cheap!
