An apple for the teacher

An apple for the teacher is a common phrase. I don't know where it
started.
I never got apples.
What I did get were cards, some ingeniously drawn, colored. Very
beautiful cards.

There was one pupil who every year brought me a box of handkerchiefs.
Three in a box.
So for quite a few years, I didn't have to buy those items
Kept your nose clean.

There was another pupil who every year brought me preserved jam.
They were in nice little containers.
Tied with colorful ribbons.

One day she came for her lesson.
Took out the jars of jam and put them on the table. This was at the
Royal Conservatory.

Okay, what did you bring?

The Tartini Concertino.

We've done that months ago!

I didn't have time to practice anything new.

So, why did you come to the lesson?

I was miffed and turned my back to her. When I turned back, the jars of
jam had vanished. She must have quickly put the jars back in her
knapsack.

Maybe I should have kept quiet about the lesson?
