Yeah, OK. Here in NZ, if schools have a thing called an APRA (Australasian
Performing Rights Association) licence, they are are allowed to use
photocopies. If you buy a big band chart, you get 1 copy of alto 1, 1 copy
of alto 2 etc etc. All very well, but if you perform often, these parts are
bound to get ragged. And if you want to replace them, can you buy the alto
1 part seperately? Of course not. You have to buy the whole pack again.
Gets costly. So the band I used to play for had big flip files with copies
of the music in them, with the originals carefully put away in boxes so that
they don't get lost, torn or have stuff spilt on them. No-one in their
right mind gives originals out. Apparently this is all legit because of
this APRA thing. It costs something like $5 per student a year for the
schools - a hell of a lot cheaper than copyright fines.
