Photocopying and a contest

I had mentioned in one of my postings that there is a music festival
here called KIWANIS.
The higher grades have to play from memory. There is also a rule that no
copied music is to be used at the competition.

One of my pupils in a slightly lower grade, played her piece from
memory. Easily played best.

When it came to giving out marks, she didn't get any. My wife asked why,
and they pointed out that the pianist had made herself a copied multi
paged piano part, so that she wouldn't have to turn pages.
(But it was from a printed part that was in possession of this pupil.)

I complained that theoretically the pianist could have played it from
memory also. To no avail.
My pupil didn't get a high mark, but she got a commendation and
consequently a handsome cash prize.
I wrote the head of the Kiwanis, but the answer was: "thems the rules".
Thought I'd tell this story.
