I had a weird experience, of the intonational kind, this evening. Having
checked the pitch and pulled out my instrument appropriately, I was playing
merrily and all was well when, all of a sudden, my open G dropped in pitch by
more than a semitone. I checked several notes with an electronic tuner,
including the throat F natural and A. Everything seemed fine except for the
open G. Thinking I was going totally bananas, I swabbed the instrument out and
tried it again. Hey presto! All was back to normal. I went round all the pads
with a cigarette paper but could find no trace of moisture around the tone
holes. I suspect the problem might have been caused by a bubble over the the
bit of the thumb hole that juts out into the bore but don't understand why it
wouldn't have effected the A. Was this a freak accident or have others
experienced this? I've certainly never had it before and it frightened the life
out of me!
