I will go out on a limb here. I remember reading somewhere (probably
liner notes for a recording) that Richard Stoltzman's first appearance
at Carnegie Hall was in a Rock band. Now, it's possible he played
clarinet but seems more likely to me that he was playing saxophone. I
don't know of any recent public performances on that instrument,
however.
