I appreciate the legal point made by Mr. Fay, but I think that there are
times when practicality must come into play. I must laugh at the reference
to page turns because at band practice last night I was having a heck of a
time executing a three beat page turn in Haydn Wood's Mannin Veen on the Eb
Clarinet part. I have three beats to wrap up a 16th note passage, turn, and
then come in on an altissimo D for more 16ths. Surely, there are many page
turns that are much more difficult, but this one was giving me a problem, so
I copied an extra page 2 to help.

Surely this does not hurt anyone. What am I expected to do. They only
include one Eb part, so should we send away for another and pay $2 and wait
weeks for delivery? That just doesn't seem practical! Perhaps music
companies should look at what they are printing and think about where these
turns are placed.

I know that I am arguing a position which is dead wrong in a legal sense,
but I am just casting aside those pretenses for a moment. No one is being
hurt by this action, and it is ridiculous to ask someone to go through the
legal red tape to make everything ok. This is not to say that I condone
people who mindlessly copy page after page of scores, however, I think that
we must be reasonable when we discuss this issue as far as practicality is
concerned and concede what is legal, but also recognize what is practical.
