Actually it's called the Dunedin Sinfonia and is a part-time
professional orchestra (i.e. there isn't enough work to live solely
off income from the orchestra). Whether or not we perform at "the
level of the CSO" is a matter of opinion (unless you mean level of
sound, in which case the CSO is certainly louder because it is
bigger). As far as professional standards are concerned, when we
performed in Christchurch last year with Nigel Kennedy the reviewer
said that we "invited comparison with the CSO". Sadly he didn't
elaborate.

On the subject of the world's most southerly basset horn players we
will undoubtedly have two of them on May 3 when we play the Gran
Partitta (although we will be hiring the instruments from the NZSO in
Wellington).
