No.....they often use the Assistant Princiapal as just that....an
assistant to the principal......often sitting there doing nothing unless
the big moments where the volume is needed occur. However, orchestras
that use four clarinetists regularly as contracted players often have the
assistant princ. play principal on concerts for which the principal player
is away.
