A somewhat unrelated question: Why was Mendelssohn's 4th symphony
(Italian) transposed from the original notation on A clarinet into Bb?
The keys signatures are much easier on the original part, but perhaps
playing it on Bb makes the articulation easier? Thanks for your input,

Any parts I've ever used came with the original notation and the Bb
transposition bound together in one part. The only reason it comes that way
is for use by players who don't own A clarinets. Doesn't mean you need to
use the transposed version. One time when I did this one in a local
orchestra, the librarian only left the Bb part of the edition on my stand.
The A "original notation" part had been separated by some previous user and
lost. I actually found it easier to re-transpose it back to A clarinet for
the rehearsal (I had practiced the part any number of times for auditions
and other performances) than to try to play the Bb version as it was
printed. I brought my own part to the next rehearsal.
