A mouthpiece cushion is a self-adhesive plastic or rubber "pad" that you stick
to the top of your mouthpiece. It prevents damage to the mouthpiece from teeth
marks. It probably makes your teeth more comfortable, too, if you tend to
"bite" the mouthpiece hard. BG is one brand; Vandoren includes them free with
some mouthpieces. I believe you can buy a package of two or so for $3. I have
personally found that the thicker ones (black rubber, BG) tend to deaden my
sound while the thinner, transparent Vandorens don't affect sound at all.
