At Northwestern it definitely DID matter. They wanted to make sure that
their students could handle the academic requirements of the performance
degree AND the general education courses (English, science, etc) which are
a part of the whole degree program.

In general I think it's safe to say that universities will be more
concerned with academic preparation and conservatories will not. Consider
the reputation of a university with regard to a non-music student: how
high do they expect SAT scores to be for Joe Schmoe? Chances are, the
music departments will be pretty close to that average.
