Subj: applause
Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 06:25:14 -0500

I've found that as the years have passed, any problem I used to have
with people applauding between movements has essentially disappeared. A
far worse sin is to give anybody a hard time about it. What I find
INCREASINGLY annoying, however, is the near-universality of standing
ovations, at least apparently in California (well, in Fresno - but that
may make it self-explanatory). Are people so starved for entertainment
that every performance is a world event? Good grief, what do they have
left to show when a performance really is exceptional? Or can't anyone
tell the difference anymore?
