Subj: Questions for college choice experts
Date: Tue, 17 Mar 1998 22:06:17 -0500

I have several questions for the college choice experts (from whom I
have so far learned a lot). Please note that I know what the college
guides and websites say. I am interested in your opinions and personal
experiences. Feel free to e-mail me privately at:

1. Which music schools are likely to consider piano proficiency (as
well as clarinet proficiency) for a prospective clarinet performance
major? How do these schools evaluate proficiency on a second instrument
-- audition at the same time as clarinet audition, grades on recognized
exams (e.g., Trinity College Music examination), other methods?

2. Please provide some perspective on SAT scores. Some schools (e.g.,
Julliard, Curtis)say that SAT scores do not have to be submitted. Are
they serious? (Does not submitting them put you at a disadvantage?) How
much do SAT scores count for prospective performance majors at other
schools where they do have to be submitted (e.g., Northwestern, Oberlin,
University of Michigan, Peabody, Eastman, Indiana University, etc.)?

Thanks from a clarinet mother.
