In response to Jeff's question:

First, please pardon any spelling errors. Second, this a brief response, and
is by no means complete.

Klezmer music is Jewish folk music from central and eastern Europe. Most
often, Klezmer musicians performed at festivals, special occasions, weddings,
etc. Please note that the roots of Klezmer are the same roots as the
"non-Jewish" folk music of most central and eastern European countries,
including the Balkan region. The art of Klezmer has seen a revival over the
last 10-20 years in the United States, largely due to such outstanding groups
as the Klezmer Conservatory Band, the Klezmatics, and other groups, and the
increased participation of musicians such as Itzhak Perlman, etc. David
Krakenauer, clarinet professor at Mannes and Manhattan is very active in
several groups.
