I had a physical therapist dissuade me from using a neck strap for the
reason that it transfers the weight of the instrument on to the
neck/shoulder muscles. This is evidently potentially as troubling as
arm/hand muscle problems. I had a long standing right arm problem solved
by this therapist with 1.) posture adjustment/improvement (including a
good chair), 2.) hand and arm strengthening exercises, and 3.) a
stretching routine before playing. Oh yes, 4.) icing down after strenuous
playing.
Dr. Borchert mentioned using the strap when playing standing. I find that
playing standing improves my posture in general, and relieves the
problems with my right arm.
"Tradition" is not a reason to avoid the neck strap, any more than
majority use is a reason to use it. You have to do what works for you.
