When I started playing, I really wanted to play the trombone. However, I was
told I porably shouldn't because I didn't have enough of an arm span. In fact,
when I started playing the clarinet I couldn't reach all of the keys. My thumb
would ache, so we used extra padding on the thumb rest. Now, in high school, I
am proud to say I don't use any padding and my arm is buff. The way I see it
is that straps can be bad-habbit developing-- suppoting the horn the way it
was made to be supported is the best way to do things. Sure, there will be the
few exceptions. But I would have been an exception and I turned out to just
fine. (1st chair, too).
