Doesn't a closer tip opening REQUIRE (or at least strongly suggest) a
stiffer reed? And I would have though a more OPEN facing would be
freer-blowing. Am I confused?

The closer tip does not require the reed to travel or bend as much for closure
which results in tone. The more open tip requires more flexibility in the
reed for closure----that is a softer reed.
A closer tip will requre a stiffer reed IF, IF, IF all other things are equal.
