I've had TMJ for quite awhile now, mine won't be fixable until after my
teeth are straightened with braces. I was born with a small jaw,
therefore there isn't enough room for the neccessary number of teeth,
this caused other problems, TMJ being one of them. I notice playing
problems mostly when I switch instruments to often. form the concert
Bflat to the Contra-alto and everything in between. I sometimes find it
difficult to drop my jaw into that lower position, and if I play for too
long, I get this monstrous headache. If you find yourself having
problems, I recomend you tell your director of the situation and let him
know that there may come a time when you just need to stop playing and
rest. That's really the only way to treat the problem when it comes to
the music. It's always better to stop playing and relax, then it is to
hyperextend your jaws capability and never be able to play again.

I was wondering....do any of you suffer from TMJ, how do you treat it,
and
how does it affect your clarinet playing?

Thanks,
Karen
