Why would more closed be necessarily "brighter"? Wouldn't
the reed strength for the particular mouthpiece make
more difference (in general, a stiffer reed for a more
closed mouthpiece)?
A closer tip opening does not automatically preclude the use of harder reeds
and mean that the mouthpiece will be freer blowing. Curve length, interior
design, window size , rail thickness, curve proportions, and subtle shapes
within the mouthpiece curve itself also play significant roles in determining
resistance.
