This is a very good question. You know, I knew a person at University of
Michigan when I was an undergraduate who played on different mouthpieces
for everything....and he sounded really good. However, he was the
exceptionl. Most people perform with the same mouthpiece and reed setup
on both the A and Bb clarinets. Some people (the really lucky ones!!!)
get to play on both the same mouthpiece and barrel setup.

The problem with the switch is that the A clarinet has a smaller bore,
thus, reeds on the Bb feel harder on the A. After awhile, you may feel
better with the switch and learn to adjust....but it takes constant
practice on both instruments.
