The joint commonly impacted by the weight of the clarinet is where the
bones of the thumb join the bones in the hand, just above the wrist. It
has been pointed out on this list before that for some reason, in women
this joint is less stable than it is in men and "dislocates" (for lack of
a better word) much more easily. Speaking only for myself, I have very
long thumbs for a woman, and find that correct hand position is different
for me, with the thumb rest just to the right of the upper knuckle. I
think my solution really requires moving the thumbrest; I just haven't
done it yet!
