Buffet instruments - and probably most of the rest - have their wood
impregnated with oil under pressure before they ever leave the factory.
This *ought* to prevent any cracks which might be directly caused by
drying-out and re-waterlogging of the wood. It can't stop secondary
problems such as over-expansion of very wet tenon corks, which can cause
damage. Perhaps oiling the bore helps to maintain a good finish - maybe
someone really knows about this???
