I saw a "Live from Lincoln Center" Broadcast last week featuring the New
York Philharmonic. As I was listening, I thought, "that sounds like
Stanley Drucker" (having some of his recordings, I have begun to
recognize a characteristic sound). But when the camera focused on the
clarinetists, I didn't see anyone who looked, well, OLD ENOUGH to be
Stanley Drucker and in his 50th year with the orchestra. Nonetheless,
it was established later in the broadcast that he was playing, and yes,
in his 50th year with the orchestra! Of course starting at 19 makes him
a bit younger than I expected, but all I can say is that if 50 years of
serious orchestral playing leaves you looking that good at 69 or 70, I'm
going to start spending more time practicing!
