I can believe either or both may be correct, at different times maybe, since
I suspect that the regular and thick-blank reeds are cut on different
machines, or at least with different settings on the same machine, and
therefore would be of different thicknesses and therefore different
(playing) hardness. (By "hardness" and "softness" I mean the characteristic
supposedly ranked by the reed number.) But if they were the same physical
thickness, would the thick blank reed, if it is less dense, be also a softer
reed? (And remember, we havn't yet settled on whether that assumption is true.)

I can see a research project here, for which I don't have the time.
