Your story (which I've dumbly snipped) illustrated another
possibility in ensuring performance opportunities. If the
orchestral program at a given school is impacted, there may
be local orchestras which can provide valuable performance
experience in spite of the competition for parts in the school's
orchestra. And a fringe benefit of the community orchestras
is that many of them offer per-service pay. This is how I
still maintained my orchestral growth while getting my
undergraduate degree. Not only did I play more often than
my colleagues at school, but my grocery bill was covered
each month!
